General Information about Tortola.

Road Town Tortola from quayside 17th April 2003 (John Firth)

I would say this was the lowest point on the cruise for us. Due to bureaucracy between health and customs we were not allowed to disembark until lunch time so most of the trips were cancelled and by then we had a tropical downpour which lasted all afternoon. We managed to walk across the muddy ground into Road town in the afternoon but found there was not much there. The only souvenir shop was very expensive. we heard from another passenger that Colombian Emeralds shop was worth a visit. Dodging the rain there were a couple of tents selling bits and bobs on the open, must of the traders had gone home by then. We were not impressed with the place and would not put ourselves out to go again. Obviously that is our opinion but someone going on a better day and being able to get beyond Road Town may have a better time.

The currency is US$. This was the only port we had to fill in a landing card the day before we landed. We posted some postcards from here on the 17th April and when we received them a month later they were postmarked 29 April, the day after we got home!

If you wish to use your mobile phone here you will need to set up Triband with your mobile phone company before you leave the UK.

VIRGIN GORDA

Those who take the local boat from Tortola to Virgin Gorda may wish to seek out this rather charming little building in the middle of the island. (Bill and Sue Crow)
