Take a tour, any tour, but take a tour. We’ve done the “sights of St Peterburg”, the “Peter & Paul” tour, and the “Romanov Dynasty” tour. Our favourite being the ‘sights’, which included the Winter Palace, the Church of the Spilt Blood (very good flea market there), and Red October shopping centre, as well as touring the city by bus. Remember to have dollars in SMALL denominations as the street vendors are all to keen to give you some bargains. Although we have never seen it, The Hermitage Museum is very good (and very very large), and the metro shopping trip is said to be awesome. But as this is your first time there sight-seeing may be a better option. There is always next time :o) (Alan and Katrina Jones)
