Madeira is Portuguese territory, however it appears that EU customs regulations do not apply here and the the same restrictions apply to importing goods from here to the UK as those from other none EU countries. The currency is the Euro.
The ship ties up along the harbour wall and it is a fair step on foot through the tunnel to the town centre. When we were there a complimentary free foot passenger ferry was in operation from the ship to Funchal. You just had top show your cruise card. There are a few shops along the quayside which sell typical Madeira type souvenirs such as Lace work, T shirts etc and it is a good place to purchase cheap local wines.

Unfortunately we had to cancel our trip out here due to illness, but have heard the Toboggan runs are great fun and there are many flowers to see.

If you take the funicular to the top of the mountain in Funchal you can walk to the starting point of the sledge run. I found taking these pictures much more fun than taking the ride down. .(David Toft)
On Madeira we took a half day excursion to Eira Dos Serrados (or something spelt similar) which translates to the Nun's Valley and is really beautiful. It also included the market in Funchal and a toboggan ride - interesting and I'm glad I did it.( thanks to Lyn Claridge King )
