General Information about Lanzarote.

Lanzarote not my favourite of the Canary islands and I think that mainly due to the weather we had in June last year when we cruised. The island is situated in the Atlantic off the coast of Africa, the island belongs to Spain. Weather is sub tropical which remains the same throughout the year. The island is made up of lava streams, dormant volcanoes and cultivated terraces which the islanders grow their vines , figs and maize etc. When we visited my mother and myself did the camal trip/ fire Mountain, I did not go on the camal in the end as the thing frightened me, so poor mother had to go with another woman who was as terrified as myself. Mum said it was a brilliant experience and one never to be forgotten.Pictures are taken of you as you start on your trek. If you like camals then this is a good excursion to take. After the camal rides you are then back on your coach and taken to the beginning of the journey to Fire Mountain. The first thing you do whilst here is see exactly how hot the earth is here we had three demonstrations. The first was having a handful of stones placed in your hands and you paseed them but they were very hot so please be careful. The second dem was a load of grass placed on an opening within 2 minutes it was alight. The third was the water from the blow hole that rushed up into the air (please be careful here as you do not know when the water will burst up and it does make a wooshing noise and makes you jump) The Fire Mountains themselves are Timanfaya and Tinecheide. Fish is the main dish of the island and is eaten with 'wrinkled' potatoes and a special sauce called mojo picon.Obviously belonging to Spain you still get Paella and tapas. Wine is local. If you wish to use your time sunbathing then the nearest beach is Coste Teguise which is 5 miles along the coast and the beach is fine light sand, please if this is the beach that you want to go please stress to the taxi driver as they really do not want to take you here, we had a lot of hassle as they wanted to take us to a beach that was an hour away, we said no we wanted to go here and they were very rude and not obliging, so we ended up back on Aurora, which was no hardship. In the Canaries they use Euro's which is their main currency. To phone the UK dial 00 then 44 then your code obmitting the 0. If you are looking to rent a car then there are offices around the old Arrecife Grand Hotel, El Reducto Beach, Cabrera Medina. Tel 928 810949. All in all I would do this island again as I am sure there are alot of fasinating places to explore, not the type of holiday place for me if I had to spend a fortnight here. Thanks To Tracey Britton

There is a nice beach virtually next to Arrecife called Matagorde, nice and clean and quiet, sun beds, safe swimming and a shopping centre, never had any problems with taxi drivers Thanks to R.Read
